Great Job Halifax

Here is the Monthly Report from Halifax. A very well done report.

We continue to be very busy.
Joseph is embracing the ship welfare visitors hours he is flexing to enable visitation of crew on Sundays and in the later evenings when there are many short turnarounds. Having checked in again with the crew of the Vivienne Sheri D, they continue to not have access to WFFI on board their vessel. This has been report to ITF Karl Risser and we pur

I followed up with our friend Dr. Jason Zuidema of NAMMA on his conversation with Captain Alan Gray in May of last year during a International Ports Conference. Captain Gray shared that he would roll out an initiative to increase voluntary tolls at the Port of Halifax. No I have spoken to is aware of this commitment. Jason will follow-up if possible.

Our Toast to Spring Auction raised $1966.

The Halifax Pilots hosted a meeting in our conference area on April 15th. They always give a donation. The Master Mariners, Atlantic Canada hosted their AGM here on May 14th and the Port Community Liaison met in our lounge. Bud Streeter shared details about our ministry which were well received. Many of the long time management team have retired and we were pleased to meet members of this committee who were not aware of who we are.

Our volunteer appreciation will be held on May 22 at Government House hosted by Their Honours.

Our first BBQ take-out of the season is May 29th. We have 150 orders for burgers.

June 25th is the International Day of the Seafarer. It has been tradition for a decade now that our Filipine-Canadian Friends serve up delectable lunches, free to visiting seafarers, and a take-out luncheon which our community partners enjoy. This years’ theme, “My Harassment-Free Ship” is a bold initiative to promote a culture of respect and zero tolerance for the bullying and harassment at sea. MtS Halifax receive requests from IHQ often and have been active in supporting international messages. I was able to provide a quote from the captain of the NYK
Meteor, which should appear in the next FAN magazine. We will serve approximately 100 people.

Sea Sunday will be celebrated on July 13th. I have shared the information provided by IHQ to Rev’d Heather MacEachern at the Cathedral of All Saints. She usually uses the coloring pages for Sunday School as well as the literature to pass out and the sermon. I have also forwarded to the Diocese of NS and PEI as well as church contacts I have e-mail addresses for. We will post as well on FB, website and LinkedIn.

The Small Refurbish Centre application I applied for was approved with the MOU on May 8th. I signed off on May 16th digitally, therefore we should receive funding for renovating the front wheelchair assessable ramp and stairs, next week.
“Safe Talk”, is the Suicide Prevention course that is mandatory training for all station managers, chaplains, ship visitors and volunteers. This is an excellent investment of 4 hours. The intention is that this will be rolled out in every station or area group of stations. I am hopeful to partner with Saint John for training this year and believe that Reverend Joshua Messick is committed to coming
from Baltimore to do this for us.

Some of you may recollect that ten years ago I partnered with a local agency to develop an information package with the goal of approaching automotive dealers and corporations. Back then Captain Jack Gallagher, our Monday morning volunteer, agreed that this was an excellent strategy to attract “new money” rather than continually ask from the same wells. He and John Attersley worked with me to put the package together. I attach the inserts and will provide the jacket at the meeting. I believe this to be a beneficial tool worth updating to increase the breadth and depth of our community partnerships in the coming years. As it stands, this is rather outdated.

Respectfully Submitted,
Helen Glenn
